Its kelly-green shamrocked awning boasts a serious challenge to local carnivores: “The Best Burger on Staten Island!” Though this claim is, in fact, mighty hard to prove, Duffy’s undeniably offers up a fine specimen of that classic American sandwich. The half-pounders, served on a toasted English muffin, are best ordered a juicy medium-rare. Live large and opt out of the go-with chips; you won’t regret paying extra for the crispy crinkle-cut fries. Most of the ten or so tables are in the narrow, adjoining back rooms, where families and firemen sit down for piles o’ crab-claw cocktail (a popular burger precursor) and house specials, like pot roast or open-face sandwiches layered with hot pastrami, sauerkraut, and Swiss cheese. In the ten-seat bar, locals watch the game of the day as they drink dollar drafts of Miller Gold, under the watchful gaze of a pair of leprechauns.
Mon.—Wed., 11:30 a.m.—11 p.m.; Thu.—Sat., 11:30 a.m.—midnight; Sun., 11:30 a.m.—10 p.m.
