Don’t be fooled by the “café” in the name—this neighborhood spot is an out-and-out diner. The menu’s seemingly inexhaustible selection starts with a full range of egg dishes before moving onto 8-ounce burgers, oversized salads, and hot and cold sandwiches. Daily specials cover Italian favorites like parmigianos and lasagna, or old school staples like liver and onions. Greek dishes are a strong suit; a tasty spanakopita with thick strands of spinach and chunks of cheese is topped by crisp phyllo. Moussaka, more sweet than savory, tops layers of ground lamb, firm potato, and eggplant with rich béchamel. Kebobs, souvlakis, and gyros, available with a fluffy rice pilaf, round out the Greek offerings. Interior adornments are limited to five small prints depicting classical icons like the Parthenon, the Trojan Horse, and “The Creation of Adam.” A neon sign in the window boasts “World’s Best Coffee,” although the actual joe tends to be closer to diner standard than anything globally anointed.
Recommended DishesSpinach pie with Greek salad, $8.75; moussaka with soup or salad, $8.75
