Profile

This unassuming grab-and-go eatery on Smith Street’s restaurant strip serves an extensive range of Latin fare that leans toward the Dominican Republic for influence. Its space has the usual open facade and full brick walls, but plastic terracotta roofing and a single line of wobbly tables hint that Cibao’s isn't angling for any design awards. In-house service is also something of an afterthought at a venue where takeout rules the day, and Cibao is a model of efficiency in that crucial sector: Orders are given and filled in less time than it takes to wonder whether paella is really a Dominican specialty (not to mention whether the traditional dish should include beef or the odd stray olive). The three-meal menu starts with two-egg/home fries specials, mango shakes, and green sauce steak sandwiches. One’s best bets may be traditional rice dishes and the many varieties of island-style pork -- and drunk comfort can always be found in a plate of sweet platanos.
