With worn, mottled tile floors and a sun-bleached, scalloped red awning, El Encuentro feels lonely and unflappable, separate from its eco-conscious, boutique-dotted neighborhood. Inside, red and blue lights cast a neon glow over chairs covered in ketchup-red pleather; a jukebox in the corner cranks out Latin pop tunes. Lunch-counter classics here are heavily salted; portions are large, if unremarkable. Chicharrones are deep-golden-brown chunks of fried chicken necks and backs; with a large mound of yellow rice and soupy red beans, it’s a cheap, filling meal. Yellow tostones, pounded wafer-thin and fried crisp, taste more of fryer oil than of plantain. Quibbles aside, this blue-collar, family-run establishment evokes another era in the Slope, long before strollerville.
