At this Puerto Rican greasy spoon, the dining room is loud and cheery, the service is quick, and the food is served in heaping portions. Embroidered beach balls hang from the ceiling, and tables are decorated with images of Latin pop stars. Behind the counter, cooks make a show of hacking away at fresh, crunchy lechon (roasted suckling pig)a stand-out in this Bronx area, where the competition is stiff. The fare is the typical milieu of soups, seafood, and meat platters: shrimp in familiarly buttery garlic sauce, a salt cod salad that tastes like tuna salad marinated in the sea, and chicharrones. Options for dessert are plentiful, if you're willing to drink it. Try morir soñando (a Dominican beverage of orange juice and milk shaken over ice), or opt for a lighter finish with a chilled juice.
