Profile

The jury is out on the silver escutcheons and conquistador helmets tacked onto white walls like Man of La Mancha props. But most of the Spanish traditions honored by El Olivo are more judiciously chosen as the menu hews to classic Iberian seafood recipes and a few chicken, veal, and steak dishes. The house paella’s plump, fresh seafood (with chicken, chorizo, and lobster optional) is piled on saffron-perfumed Spanish rice. Mariscada, the seafood stew, forgoes rice for irresistible potato disks closer to chips than fries. And the chef’s mastery of grilled octopus—dusted with mildly spicy paprika or bedded with sautéed red peppers—rivals Greek Astoria’s toque. Who knew that was possible?
