Profile

In the Summer of 2009, the red-sauce standard-bearer Marco Polo Ristorante swapped its takeout operation for a new wine bar called Enoteca on Court. The space retains its gargantuan wood-burning oven and sized its international wine list to match. There’s charcuterie and cheese plates, sharable small entrées from the oven, and pizza and panini. With a traditional menu in a modern setting, Enoteca on Court may be the kind of restaurant that brings the neighborhood’s old and new residents together.

While known as a wine bar, Enoteca on Court is at its heart a neighborhood pizza place. But a pizza place for those with a discerning palate. Cooked in the huge wood-burning oven that separates the bar from the restaurant, Enoteca on Court offers 17 different types of pizza. Some notable ones - the margherita (perfectly seasoned tomatos, creamy mozzarella and basil), the Napoli (a cheeseless tomato pizza with a light scattering of salty anchovies and chunks of garlic), and the Guanciale (creamy mozzarella with strips of slightly crispy pork cheek, chunks of potato and a dash of fresh rosemary). The common thread between them is the thin crispy, yet chewy crust that provides the perfect balance and contrast to the toppings. Enoteca on Court also offers a wide selection of small-plate dishes from salumi and formaggi to panini and salads. The restaurant shares a wine cellar with the very established Marco Polo restaurant next door resulting in an impressive selection of international wines and memorable pairings. However, for this diner, very few things in life come close to the perfection of a glass of chilled prosecco and a perfectly charred slice of pizza napoli.
