Profile

Since it opened in 2002, Es-Ca has attracted a bustling singles scene that spills over its big, horseshoe-shaped bar into the dining room. Music pumps so loudly that talking to your dining companions is a battle, and a gigantic television blaring sports in the dark-wood rimmed balcony adds to the din. The menu also suffers from issues of duality. While Es-Ca calls itself Italian, Asian-influenced American dishes are dotted amidst a near baker’s dozen of pastas (which sometimes arrive not just al dente, but undercooked) and a few traditional starters, like eggplant rollatini. Other than that, you’ll find everything from panko breadcrumbs on pork chops to shrimp and risotto. The one thing they do consistently manage well is fresh seafood, from the raw bar to generous, sweet, lumps of crab meat in the middle of the spring rolls.
