Whatever pork-fed magic fueled the rise of the Eton in Carroll Gardens did not spread to the Vanderbilt branch. This location has an appealing bamboo surf-hut theme, but beyond some capable pulled pork and chicken, there's little in the way of memorable food. Noodle soups are all but flavorless despite the generous mounds of meat; foil-wrapped Asian sliders folded into spongy buns and covered by sweet barbecue sauce emerge congealed, greasy balls. Pork is the menu’s only real star; it works best in its purest (pulled) form, served beside bok choy over rice. The doughy dumplings themselves don't justify their own acclaim – one might be inclined to discard the singed, chewy shells to get at the sweet flesh within, and intriguing “specialties” like a fishy crab Rangoon dumplings are especially disappointing. Truly, the spot only succeeds as a quick stop for shave ice and bubble tea.
