Profile

Fat Hippo opened its doors in the long-vacant 71 Clinton Fresh Food space. At the helm is Chris Scott (a producer-director who runs Great Scott Films), Jordan Sorman (formerly of Meet and Yucca Bar), and chef Ten Vong, who was the head toque at Meet and has been chef de cuisine at Mercer Kitchen and GuastivinoÂ’s. With banquettes and a dark wood bar, the décor is chic and minimal (somewhat like Falai across the street) but the vibe is relaxed (a bartender was pumping out Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Modest Mouse on his iPod when we stopped by).

It seemed like a decent place, walking by, to be fair. So I was surprised that it took a black person 20 minutes to be served a drink. I'd say it was coincidence (and there was a black waitress named Janelle), but the bar was empty. After a while, the bartender was just glossing over my perplexed expression. When she finally came over, even after my nicest request, she rolled her eyes and looked at a guy at the end of the bar (who turned out to be the owner!) and took her sweet time. Snobby and hurtful for no good reason.
