The California-based burger chain’s first New York location lives up to its name: The burgers, fries, and hot dogs here are indeed fatty. More gussied up than your local McDonald’s, Fatburger takes a buffed-up fast-food menu and plops it down in an open-air dining room complete with thick leather booths and a bar. Order at the counter and your tray of gluttony will be delivered right to your table. As the only Fatburger—save for the location in Las Vegas—that serves alcohol, the Murray Hill location offers a bevvy of beers and cocktails with happy-hour specials daily. But the main attraction are the colossal burgers sizes medium, large, XXL, or XXXL that can be topped with chili, guacamole, bacon, or a fried egg. Thick patties are a step above the typical grab-and-go burger: lightly charred on the outside and tender on the inside, smashed between a classic potato bun. Fries can be served skinny (standard cut) or fat (potato wedges) and are best topped with meaty chili and cheddar cheese. For extra plumpness, Fatburger offers damning milk shakes. Thick and creamy soft-serve topped with every delight from your childhood ice-cream parlor makes for a gut-bursting ending.
