Profile

Something familiar has taken root in the upper limit of Morningside Heights. You know it right away with this café-slash-bistro (the second restaurant from the team behind Jin Ramen), a newcomer that already feels like a neighborhood mainstay. It's the genial service, the typewriter, and the books lining the shelves under the bar that make you feel like you’re at home. The menu’s manageable—a burger here, a fish dish or two there—and it combines West Coast, Asian, French, and Italian concepts. The flavors and presentation won't knock you out, but they will please, and that is enough. That is until, inevitably, you polish off a bowl of mushroom risotto and wonder why you didn't savor those dark, beefy bites and eat more slowly. By night Flat Top is cozy and romantic, and by day airy and affable. There's a communal table by the windowed front corner; linger there with your laptop, a cup of Blue Bottle coffee, or a glass of wine as you watch the city pass by.
