The Columbia crowd eagerly anticipated the opening of this upmarket Spanish restaurant, which replaced a Taco Bell/KFC franchisen in June 2007. Owner Ramon Diaz also helms the Cuban takeout spot El Floridita next door, but in comparison, Floridita Tapas is a relative disappointment. Although the dining room, with its woven-leather banquettes, etched-glass sconces, and white linen-clad tables, is a step up from scruffier nearby options, speakers blasting Latino pop and two big-screen TVs flickering behind the bar sully the ambience. The menu, too, undermines its success. Out of the forty or so tapas choices, those containing seafood—such as shrimp al ajillo and fried bacalao—have a spongy texture and watered-down flavor that suggests recent defrosting. Traditional entrees like paella Valenciana and arroz con pollo, are served classically in huge crockpots (at huge prices), but the preparations are oily and bland. Since there’s a decent shortlist of Spanish wines and beers, and several varieties of housemade sangria, you might head here for drinks instead, and then down a delicious Cuban sandwich from next door.
