The former La Cantina Cucina was mistaken by too many online dinner–seekers as a Mexican joint, so owner Federico Sammarone renamed the restaurant after himself. The kitchen continues to maintain a quiet pride in preparing careful, sturdy Sicilian entrées. The cooks’ attentiveness begins with the tableside bread: freshly baked, triangular white loaves that are warm and crisp on the outside, soft in the middle. It’s a thoughtful touch that bodes well for the rest of the meal, be it a fresh tilapia filet topped with olives and crushed tomatoes, springy curls of lightly fried calamari, or huge homey meatballs. Like the food, the dining room leans toward cozy caution, with red carpeting, a tin ceiling, wide wood-framed mirrors, white tablecloths, lit candles, and a gigantic chalkboard listing the entire menu. A sweet finish: The house specialty is homemade cannoli filled to order with a generous helping of fresh cream.
