Friend’s Café owner Tony Sehev knows his customer base. He’s fully stocked with grab-and-run meals and snacks for cash-strapped NYU students. Wicker baskets stuffed to the brim with chips, energy bars, and apples counter the carb cravings of junk-foodies and health nuts alike, while vitamin-packed energizer smoothies such as the Ginseng Ginger Flush (carrot, apple, ginger, ginseng, and bee pollen) and Green Machine (apple, blueberry, banana, spirulina, and muscle powder) offer a midday pick-me-up. Breakfast options such as “fresh” saran-wrapped donuts and greasy croissants are better left untouched; sleep late and try a tasty, hand-made sandwich such as the Cub, a pileup of roasted turkey, apple-baked Virginia ham, and American cheese that’s topped with coleslaw and Russian dressing and outstrips any bag lunch your mom ever packed.
