An unassuming Japanese izakaya-style restaurant on MacDougal Street is actually the first Stateside location of a popular chain in Japan. At first glance, Fukurou's menu is a bit off-putting; it includes a deep-fried spring roll with salmon and cheese, as well as deep-fried brie. But if you stick to more familiar options, like the grilled miso-marinated salmon, you should have an affordable, satisfying, and fun meal. Order the Avocado Tofu to start; it's soft and creamy, and will even please tofu skeptics. There's not much sushi offered here, but yellowtail carpaccio with grilled scallion is fresh and well-season with a little bit of spice and a little bit of sweet sauce. The Salmon & Salmon Roe rice pot is a standout: The server prepares it tableside, mixing the ingredients together so each bite includes a burst of caviar, a bite of protein, and a spoonful of carbs. At around $10 a dish less, your meal can easily come out to under $25 if you share items with a group. The atmosphere is welcoming; each table has views of the open kitchen, and the chefs all look up to greet you with a traditional Japanese welcome after you walk inside. You'll want to stay a while because this restaurant is so small and cozy, and there's an extensive selection of twenty types of sake, Asahi, and Sapporo beer, and wine. There's alsoa small dessert menu filled with green tea and black sesame ice cream, both light and refreshing ways to finish a good, protein-packed meal.
