Profile

From the outside, Gen looks like any other Prospect Heights sushi spot, but there’s reason it’s consistently crowded with Japanese-food seekers from within and beyond the neighborhood. The fish is screamingly fresh; yellowtail and salmon are especially popular. House maki rolls come in fun fusion combinations like the saku saku filled with chopped tuna, avocado, scallion, spicy mayo, and mixed nuts, topped with crispy potato shreds reminiscent of the potato sticks served as childhood snacks. Appetizers are similarly excellent: Buta kakuni, a dish of decadently fatty, slow-cooked pork belly arrives meltingly tender, and spicy citrus salmon equates to sashimi layered over thin slices of lemon and topped with diced jalapeños for an incredibly bright flavor. Gen’s room is cozy and the walls are filled with an ever-rotating selection of artwork, but when the food is this good, you won’t be looking up much.

Recommended Dishes

Spicy citrus salmon, $7; buta kakuni, $10.50; saku saku maki, $9.50
