Windsor Terrace

Situated on a quiet block in the South Slope, this unassuming trattoria turns out better food than many of its more expensive peers to the north and east. The menu, which includes standards like meatballs, calamari, penne alla vodka, and chicken rollatini, isn’t very adventurous, but it is well executed. Among the highlights is an appetizer called Nonna’s Famous Meatballs: three ethereally light meatballs with tender, still pinkish interiors, topped with tomato sauce, fresh ricotta, and basil. Many of the pastas, including the lasagna and the tagliatelle, are made in house and are more than worth the slightly higher price. The menu’s second-course offerings include a succulent grilled hanger steak, served atop garlicky mashed potatoes and crowned with fried cipollini onions. The wine list is composed of simple, tasty, and affordable bottles. And be sure to leave room for dessert, particularly the excellent almond cake.
