Cooks and kitchen help often take meal breaks in the spacious, spartan dining area of this Japanese fast-food mini-chain’s West Village outpost. They seem to favor cooked meals such as teriyaki and Japanese stews over rice. When you reach the order counter, follow their lead; despite the name, raw fish is the weak link here. Timid sashimi comes in faded pastels, and even maki rolls such as eel with cucumber carry incongruous saltiness. Dinner boxes are better bets. Bento versions include plump dumplings, rice, and salad with generous teriyaki or tempura options; combination boxes pump up portions and add a Styrofoam cup of miso soup. Most business here seems delivery-driven, so there’s no trouble getting a seat. If two-year-old periodicals on the metal magazine rack don’t pique your interest, the window counter facing Greenwich Avenue affords a privileged view of ceaselessly intriguing West Village pedestrians. For an adventuresome dessert, hanging bags near the register offer Japanese sweet snacks sch as marsmallow candy and chocolate Pocky sticks alongside shrimp crackers and pastalike fish snacks.
