Golden Bowl shares an address with a similar workaday Chinese eatery next door. But this cramped corridor-like space comes off well in the appearance department, looking cleaner and brighter and even hosting a marginally younger and more affluent crowd--expect to swim through a group of teens soon after high school lets out nearby. Menus are irrelevant here: You point out four items from the many heating trays in the counter by the front door. They are then heaped together in an indecipherable jumble on a single plate and delivered to your rickety plastic table with a plate of white rice and a bowl of oily broth for the total price of $3.50. Of course, you mostly get what you pay for, with often bland items that are indistinguishable from one another--though, importantly, the rice is cooked fresh and perfectly. Among the entrees, the best is the steamed mixed vegetables, a medley of cauliflower, carrots and onions in a buttery garlic sauce. The blue crab, dredged in beaten egg and then pan-fried, is a bargain, though you get noticeably more egg than crab.
