Most chefs know: you can please all the people some of the time, and some of the people all the time, but you cannot please all the people all the time; however, Alfred Portale, chef at Gotham Bar & Grill, has built a stellar reputation defying that adage. In fact, in a year that has brought about the demise of some of Manhattan’s most revered spots – immediately coming to mind are Café Des Artistes, Chanterelle, and the Rainbow Room (which, combined, operated for 205 years) – Gotham seems to be thriving, as it always has. I arrived ahead of my friends who had booked the table for a 6.30 seating, I was waived ahead to the bar in a friendly manner by the lady behind the computer but without any idea of if I should order a drink or look for the friends. They arrived soon, and there was profuse attention to what we would like to order. Excellent effort from the staff. And the food was exquisite, too. My only question would be about the seating plans, is one expected to leave at a certain time? We lingered on with coffee and after dinner drinks beyond 9pm and the staff was clearly getting nervous. We got defensive but exited by 9.15, just feeling a little hurried. I would not even have noticed without the fact that the pre-ordering attention was so friendly, and then afterwards, a tad chilly...
