What began as a raucous eighties-style grand café has mellowed over two decades into a trusted American classic with Alfred Portale relentlessly pursuing perfection in the kitchen. Settle into a cocoon of informal but informed service. Then, depending on the season, rediscover Portale’s discipline in a lush risotto with sweet turnips and duck confit, or in seared yellowfin propped against pappardelle rolled around caponata in which each vegetable is like a jewel. — Rob Patronite and Robin Raisfeld
My wife and I were celebrating our anniversary and were looking forward to this classic restaurant. She had the seafood salad and I had the baked smoked squid. Both were exceptional both in taste and presentation. However, the entree was where we had a bit of a rough sailing. I had the New York steak. It was expertly cooked to perfection with a charred & seared outside with juicy, tender, melt in your mouth inside. However, my wife ordered the 30 day aged N.Y. sirloin well done. (This was suggested by the waiter) My wife could not finish the meal due to the strange aftertaste. I took a sample and indeed it was a bit acrid. The taste was so overwhelming, that we could not even order the dessert and coffee afterwards. It kinda ruined our dinner. The service I must say was above average but not what you would expect from an establishment of this caliber. The maturity and the ettiquette of the waiting staff was a bit off the mark too. By no means is this a bad restaurant. It is just that you expect so much from their reputation that you are bound to be let down.
Although it was incredibley expensive, I'd go here for a special occasion. The service and food was impeccible. We had a variety of food and the desserts were absolutely amazing. The wine list was extensive and the "wine guy" i feel dumb for not knowing what he's called came over and explained the prefect bottle for our meal.
