Before Whole Foods opened on Bowery in 2007, Gracefully served as the de facto grocery store of the Lower East Side for a decade. And for those unwilling to brave the megastore’s crowds for organic eggs and hormone-free milk, it remains an easy alternative. This glorified bodega has more to offer than Pellegrino and produce; its deli counter features no less than six dry-erase boards advertising over 75 strangely named sandwiches and wraps. The Godfather and the Godfather 2 are hulking hoagies, each loaded with four different kinds of Italian charcuterie including cappicola and prosciutto. The “El Desperado” panini is essentially a pressed Reuben, with Russian dressing and melted cheese oozing out of the thick toasted bread at all angles. Steer clear of anything with dry roast beef, however. “Pope of Graceland,” with melted muenster and brown gravy, sounds appealing but rather recalls chowing down on a blue suede shoe. And although it takes chutzpah to sell pastrami within spitting distance of Katz’s, Gracefully is open 24 hours, so if you need a fix after the deli has closed for the night, the market can serve as a pinch hitter.
