The lowdown

It could be argued, easily, that Gramercy Tavern is the crown jewel of the Danny Meyer restaurant empire, and it is certainly the best showcase for the restaurateur’s famed approach to over-the-top, make-everyone-feel-comfortable-at-all-costs hospitality. That is probably why locals and out-of-towners alike pack both the casual “tavern” room upfront and the more lavish dining room in the back. Another reason may be the cooking of Michael Anthony, a farm-to-table savant who once won the James Beard Foundation’s prestigious “Outstanding Chef” award. His style could best be called bucolic fine dining, and the menus are loaded with homemade sausages, seasonal vegetables, local proteins, rustic pastas, soups, and all manner of distinctly American delicacies.
