Profile

In a neighborhood better known for its dive bars and takeout joints, Hill and Bay stands out with its straightforward, seasonal menu of comfort food staples. The bistrolike atmosphere is conducive to every type of gathering: Kips Bay moviegoers can pop in for a quick bite at the stainless steel bar, while couples can cozy up at an intimate, low-lit table for a romantic meal. With a menu that features everything from steak and potatoes to a crunchy kale and radish salad, the food at Hill and Bay is accommodating. Although there is an abundance of classic American dishes like burgers, macaroni and cheese, and boneless fried chicken, simple shared plates—like a perfectly unadorned charcuterie and cheese board—have a decidedly European feel and are ideal for casual grazers. Try one of the seasonal signature cocktails dreamed up by the bartending staff, like the East Side Pink Lady with sparkling wine, grapefruit liqueur, and lemon juice. The beverage menu is innovative and a definite cut above the shot-and-a-beer deals advertised at the neighboring Irish pubs.
