They’re called baleadas—slightly charred, fluffy pancakes folded in half and packed with Añejo cheese, refried beans, and a smooth layer of crema. And they’re the reason vendor Suany Avila has been a favorite at the Red Hook ball fields for more than fifteen years. To satisfy Central American cravings year-round, the Honduran native has opened her own restaurant in Park Slope and expanded the menu to include Salvadoran classics such as yuca with fried pork and meat-stuffed pupusas. Admittedly, the larger entrées suffer from underseasoning, but the street food upholds Avila's well-earned reputation. If you’re in a clubbing mood, hang around after hours on Friday and Saturday, when the violet walls are illuminated by Christmas lights. That all-Spanish jukebox fuels a party known to last till 4 a.m.
