Group cook-it-yourself endeavors can be stressful for Type-A eaters. Hot Pot Central, in the old Dumpling Go space, is just the spot for those who want the fun of a communal cooking experience but not the potentially fretful logistics. Each seat gets its own electric stove top and personal hot pot so that diners can choose their own broth (classic pork-and-chicken bone, mixed mushroom, spicy Szechuan, or seafood tomato), their own meats (or none at all), vegetables, and, most important, dumplings, which come in seasonal varieties and soak up the broth’s flavors as they cook. A salad bar of sorts offers a boiled-peanut mix that shines with a splash of black vinegar. Be sure to order the fried dumplings, which aren’t pleated but instead folded over (like loose mini-burritos) to maximize the golden, crispy surface area. The space is open and bright, with big window-walls that offer good East Village people-watching.
