Zebra-print wallpaper, garish chandeliers, and a smattering of African masks crowd this bustling West Village Ethiopian restaurant. Named after the porous, crêpelike bread central to the cuisine, the restaurant is pleasantly eclectic, with a dim, loungelike feel and up-market cocktail list. Dishes are ideal for sharing; thick meat stews and flavorful vegetarian relishes are piled onto tangy, earthy injera, which also comes in neatly rolled segments on the side. Savor lentil-based stews like misir wot, infused with berbere sauce, by pinching the injera and folding it to the desired portion size. For those averse or allergic to wheat, injera can be prepared gluten-free if wait staff is notified 48 hours in advance. But unless you’re cool passing unwieldy, large dishes across the bar, be sure to make a reservation tables tend to fill up fast.
