Profile

This venue is closed.

You can't swing a Blackberry around these parts without smacking an art director, which makes io a welcome anachronism: an Old Brooklyn throwback of dark wood and tin ceilings where accents are refreshingly outer borough. This former seaman's tavern with its century-old oak bar has been shuttered more often than not in the past few years, and io is the latest attempt by the building's owners to tap the neighborhood's revival. This time, the menu is classic Italian: Hot antipasto for two, a groaning platter of fried calamari, baked clams and mussels marinara, is a savory exercise in fresh seafood simply prepared. While a tarted-up spaghetti carbonara holds too many peas and a gloppy cream sauce, the straight-up pork tenderloin is moist and flavorful. Ditto the toasted poundcake, a buttery artery bomb to rival any molten choco-whatever. Despite the alluring view of Manhattan, locals have yet to discover io, and its three rooms—bar, dining room and back lounge—are often empty. A waterfront park and riverside high-rises proposed for this edge of Williamsburg could deliver hordes of potential diners across the street, and—if io can stick it out—in the door.

Extra

Bored with spaghetti and meatballs but craving a bite to eat with a view? io's bar menu is straight out of the 'burbs, with pizza, burgers and popcorn shrimp.
