Profile

This venue is closed.

This cozy, casual Japanese eatery, once known as Kura Sushi, has occupied a corner in the East Village since 1988, and still serves the affordable sushi and sake that locals seem to crave. The blond wood-accented space and pared down menu lean toward the traditional—you won’t find any fruity sojou cocktails or over-the-top fusion rolls here, just straightforward sushi in an intimate environment, enhanced by rows of books devoted to Eastern philosophy and a conversation-friendly jazz soundtrack. In addition to a variety of well executed standards—colorful nigiri, tender beef negimaki, and large portioned bento boxes crammed with toothsome chicken teriyaki and tempura—the kitchen delivers some flavorful surprises, like the wasabi shumai appetizer, delicate-looking pork dumplings that pack a powerful punch, and the creamy, golden-hued sea urchin nigiri. Sake lovers will appreciate Ishikura’s carefully crafted, reasonably priced sake list (no bottle tops $40), complete with tasting notes.
