The hideout of choice for Greenwich Village transplants and uptown intelligentsia alike, this tiny café offers basic food and plenty of serenity in a quirky, well-worn space. Patrons on the go can pick up an espresso or serve themselves from four daily brews. Regulars seem to like it mostly for takeout, but those who care to settle in play chess or relax with a book at the cozy seating area off to the side. Fashioned out of a corner banquette and eclectic group of tables, it’s too cramped to spend all day here, but the cushioned chairs and throw pillows at least keep you comfortable. For non-caffeinated fuel, a pared-down menu of sandwiches and salads is available; these cater to the health-conscious. Tuna melts and ham and Swiss are joined by veggie options like sliced hard-boiled eggs served panini-style with tomato and cheese.
Recommended DishesSliced hot eggs, $6.50; fresh mozzarella sandwich, $7.50
