Profile

In the same cozy East Village space as JoeDoe, Joe Dobias and his wife, Jill, have rebranded the restaurant as a more casual eatery. The dozen stools along the bar are joined by only eight two-tops, with a communal bench or folding chairs on either side. An old car grill and three cuckoo clocks add to the informal atmosphere, which the new menu reinforces. Joe has replaced the appetizers with “snacks,” including spicy blue-cheese-and-prosciutto-stuffed peppers and delightful crispy fried chicken skins. The entrees are now intended to be shared. Macaroni and cheese topped with Ritz-cracker crumbs and big cuts of bacon sounds fun and delicious on paper, but it's actually a bit dull in execution. But the French-dip dumplings are a fun twist on the classic roast-beef-and-cheese sandwich, and the flavorful hot-dipped chicken is lightly breaded in rice flour and garlic-chili for an Asian flair. Jill can often be found behind the bar, creating dual-strawed fishbowl cocktails for two.
