Profile

It’s easy to forgive gastropub Johnny Mack’s for being more neighborhood pub than gastronomic adventure. After all, it opened in 1993, more than a decade before the British concept really crossed the pond, and does a fine job of serving eclectic, above-par vittles to the Slope’s young families, the impoverished post-college cubicle slaves, and the townie types who frequent the barroom. Some come for the food, others to suck down a few beers while playing pinball and video games or shooting pool. The surroundings—a carved dark-wood bar, tiled floor, and frescoed walls—seem to encourage lingering. Ten beers are on tap, including Johnny Mack’s Pumpkin Ale, with another fourteen bottled brews available. The menu consists of tarted up comfort food: earthy Black Angus burgers with blue cheese, mushrooms, and thick-cut bacon; fancy sandwiches; tangy spiced meatloaf; and fried chicken. Pastas and pizzas are also on offer, and the kitchen knows its way around a handful of fresh, greens-based salads and upmarket entrees.
