Profile

This Boreum Hill cantina is a French-Mexican mash-up: the grub goes both ways while the low-lit atmosphere---complete with paper lanterns, marble mirrors, and date-night corner tables---recalls its Gaelic roots. The menu plays a game of Franco/Latin back-and-forth where small plates and eccentric appetizers stand out. Guacamole is thick and velvety, and a pecan-crusted block of Brie somehow tastes just right with black truffle stuffing and pineapple-slice garnishes. Further down the menu, mushroom filling and whipped goat cheese mute the spiciness of stuffed smoky poblano pepper. The entrée list is long and uneven. Slices of fatty hanger steak lie listlessly in a black pepper sauce, while a plate of tinga chilaquiles tastes strangely nondescript despite including chunks of king crab, fried tortilla, and creamy tomatillo salsa. The night ends with accordingly lavish French desserts; crème brulee arrives in a three-part tray, its pieces separated by a pool of rich chocolate mousse.
