This two-level joint at the crossroads of Flatbush, Fifth, and Atlantic Avenues strives to be many things: a Guyanese restaurant and cocktail bar, and a champagne lounge, patio deck and fashion runway for African-American designers, whose pieces are showcased on mannequins and in photos around the space. But bright lighting and linoleum tiles detract from the smooth blond woods of the bar and back dining area, and the food falls short on sex appeal. Mango-roasted salmon and the house grilled chicken are both served in a lightly sweet brown sauce and plated with the same sides—garlic mashed potatoes without a hint of garlic, and chopped spinach that looks just-thawed. The kitchen's strengths come through in appetizers like crisp codfish cakes and jerk chicken wings with real spice. Still, the food isn't the main draw. A crowd gathers to sip sweet drinks in the neat, wooden upstairs lounge and outdoor patio.Recommended Dishes
