This Taiwanese noodle shop almost evokes the Golden Arches with its saffron-and-crimson color scheme, but any Happy Meals here are for those who appreciate pig’s blood, intestines, and breakfast-only bowls of sweet or salty soy milk. Surrounded by shelves lined with statuettes of animals, Buddhas, and less clearly defined figurines, the largely Asian-American clientele dunks fried crullers in soup, nibbles on sesame-studded buns and scallion pancakes, or wolfs down the namesake noodles which come in a deep amber broth best enriched by hunks of braised beef and pickled greens. Taiwanese cuisine tends to be spunkier than its Cantonese counterpart, but you can up the ante even further with the chile-onion relish, available at nearly every table.
Recommended DishesSalty soybean milk; $1.25; sesame cake Taiwan style, $1; shredded beef with green hot pepper, $7.25
