Profile

If you want a taste of Mediterranean-style bistro cooking filtered through the elegant largesse of the London restaurant scene, I suggest you wander across Sixth Avenue to the fine neighborhood establishment King. There, two veterans of the famous River Café, Clare de Boer and Jess Shadbolt, produce helpings of roast guinea hen flavored with lemon and ricotta, and a faithful version of Provençal fish stew made with Long Island clams, tender pieces of fluke, and an entire steamed lobster served, on the evening I enjoyed it, with toasty chunks of garlic bread and dissolving spoonfuls of fresh-whipped saffron aïoli.
