Profile

This spin-off of nearby Yuki Sushi takes a sultry approach to neighborhood Japanese dining. The large space is sleek and dark, and a waterfall adorns one of the two entrances. Inlaid-stone columns bracket the sushi and cocktail bars, and the rectangular stone is repeated along walls trimmed with dark wood. Electronica provides the soundtrack. It’s no scene, however; the clientele are a low-key mix of upper Amsterdam Avenue denizens. Classic sushi and kitchen offerings share top billing. Red snapper is lightly breaded and fried golden, then finished with the subtle citrus of a yuzu soy sauce. The house roll is a fat piece of tuna that’s complemented with mango and lobster salad, wrapped in cucumber, and topped with pearls of salmon roe. Eel comes in meaty sushi slabs, which fare better than the sauce-heavy unagi rolls. Udon soups, teriyakis, and fluffy tempuras round out the menu, with bento box specials available at both lunch and dinner.

I love this place and go here pretty often. They make very good sushi and have a decent selection of very affordable wines. I love sushi made with brown rise, and they're happy to oblige here. Moreover, their brown rice sushi doesn't fall apart, as it does at most places. Kouzan stands out from your run-of-the-mill sushi place because of its attention to detail. The miso soup is great (it tastes like it's actually made with dashi rather than a mix), the green salad is nicely served, etc. I also love the floor to ceiling windows that they keep wide open in the summer months.
