At Kristophe, chef Krzysztof Drzewiecki features a more varied, contemporary menu than at his classic Polish spot, Greenpoint's Krolewskie Jadlo (a.k.a. King’s Feast), but the two share the same Eastern European influences. The wall-embedded barrels, stone archways, and enormous heated outdoor area are virtually unchanged from the space’s previous incarnation as Old Rooster, but now there’s a cozier feel thanks to dim lighting and old-fashioned chairs both at the tables and along the bar. The twelve taps include German and Czech beers, with available flights. Traditional favorites like beef tartar and sweet potato pierogies sit alongside grilled bacon and pickles on the appetizer menu with duck pierogies and a wild game sausage plate including pheasant, elk, and, the most satisfying (and spicy), wild boar. Beef and venison burgers come thoroughly garnished on tall pretzel rolls, with thick-cut fries and a salad. Beyond the expected dishes (wiener schnitzel, stuffed cabbage) is where Kristophe really excels, from hearty wine-glazed pork chops with parsnip puree to the signature roasted duck legs in delicious cherry sauce, both pasture-raised and antibiotic/hormone-free. The dessert crepe is an excellent sweet and savory finish, stuffed with crumbly cheese and covered in strawberry coulis.
