Profile

Red lanterns hang from the front awning of this sushi spot located along a Polish stretch of Nassau where the names of most restaurants end in "ski" or "zia." Inside: Six tables and mishmash décor flaunt antiques from owner Ji Chen's mother, plus room for a chef's counter in the back. Locals dine in for wallet-friendly meals served with free hot sake under the low hum of blue fluorescent lights. To start, the hijiki—cooked black seaweed with tofu and edamame—is prepared in-house. Standard sushi and sashimi offerings are fresh, but close to 100 special rolls draw attention here. Often topped with something spicy, the rolls carry names like Yellow Submarine, Benevolence, and Five Flamingo. Extremely generous in size, a single special roll and an appetizer can fill you up. Other budget options include a maki combo or a platter of assorted sushi for $12.95, and a strong selection of vegetarian options combine sweet potatoes, Japanese pickles, and radish wrapped in rice and seaweed. For dessert, try the Volcano: tempura ice cream topped with Cool Whip and a cherry.
