Several blocks away from Times Square yet close enough to entice theatergoers, this cozy, red-checkered bistro offers American classics with a French twist. Cream-spinach omelettes with a mushroom glaze upscale the familiar; bunless burgers made with chopped steak are coated in rich Mornay, red wine, or cognac sauces then served with crunchy, thin-cut fries. Those inspired by Carlos Spaventa’s photographs of French bicycles and romantic stone stairways can opt for Parisian crêpes or fondues or—better yet—les bonnes soupes featured in the restaurant’s name. Crocks of the gruyère-crowned French onion and tomato-based Crème Andalouse are best enjoyed while seated at one of four tables on the dimly lit balcony. Mulligatawny and Soupe Paysanne a l’Orge—mushroom and barley with lamb—are also available, along with two daily specials.
