Vinny Bondi has stood at the counter of La Foccaceria for decades, an unchanged presence in a grunge-chic neighborhood that’s undergone many transformations. Established in 1914, the restaurant (like Vinny) has defied time, never wavering from generous portions of Sicilian specialties like tripe with peas and tomato sauce or Messina-style cod with pine nuts, currants and marinara sauce. Meat entrees like pork chops Calabrese with peppers, onions and white wine, or the cheese-laden chicken Palermo are especially good, and everything goes well with the delicious house wine.

Recommended Dishes

Spaghetti con sardi (sardines and fennel sauce), $10.95; chicken soltner (chicken in peppers, onions and tomatoes), $10.95; veal verdiccio (veal in artichoke hearts, mushrooms and white wine), $10.95; sicilian-style eggplant, $9.50; lentil soupt with escarole $3.95
