La Nueva Conquista is a wee old-timer that serves up the kind of bare-bones Caribbean fare you’d expect down a side street in Santo Domingo. At lunchtime, a line of Latinos snakes out the door, English is practically unheard, and there’s no menu, just what’s cooking today: Shrimp, for example, is the daily special on Fridays. If they’ve got it, try the hearty Carne Guisada (stewed beef with chunky veggies), barbecued or baked chicken, or, for more adventurous stomachs, pigs' feet. All dishes are generously portioned with white, yellow, or brown rice, red or black beans, and — if you ask — plantains. The décor doesn’t inspire lingering. There’s a Keith Haring poster and a generic oil painting of a flower vase on the bright-yellow walls. What more do you want at these prices?
Recommended DishesBeef stew with rice, $7.50; barbecued chicken with rice and beans, $7.50
