Profile

The chef at this friendly East Village oasis grew up in Mexico, under the culinary spell of cookbook author and avid gardener Diana Kennedy. That might account for the menu's reliance on fresh herbs, and its creativity. Rices are flavored with tomato, saffron, and tomatillo; moles, concocted from sesame seeds, pumpkin seeds, and guajillo chiles. The skirt steak soaks up its tequila marinade, cactus comes in a casserole, and chiles rellenos float in tomato broth.

We went out for my friend's birthday dinner Saturday night and saw 2 or 3 other birthday dinners there, sweetened by the restaurant bringing trays of champagne flutes for the whole table. Everyone was happy with what they ordered (we loved the empanada with rice pudding and espresso ice cream we ordered for birthday dessert) and the sangria was delicious. I was super happy with the prices and portion sizes, especially compared with La Rosa Mexicana where everything seems ridiculously small and overpriced. The only downfall was that the restaurant, super busy, didn't seat us until 45 minutes after our reservation time.

Great service and pretty decent food

I ate at La Palapa last night and I had probably the best service ive ever had, my waitress was so knowledgeable about the menu and gave great recommendations. I think the trick at La Palapa is to share dishes, the fried plantanes were ridiculously good and the main dish we had was pork and was also really great. i coud have used more on the margarita side but you cant win them all. I would definitely go back
