The name came from a discarded sign of an old Elizabeth St. bakery, the large oven from a junk pile in a Flushing warehouse, and the mismatched chairs and tables from innumerable scavenging trips, but the flavors of restauranteur Jim Mamary (Schnack, Pacifico) delectable pizza are all his own. On La Rosa & Son’s signature pies, the crust is not too thin or too thick, and the basil-tinged sauce provides the perfect foundation for fresh toppings ranging from rich mozzerella di bufala to woodsy mushrooms to exotic white truffle oil. And the atmosphere, a throwback to the mom-and-pop pizzerias of the 50s-era Brooklyn, is just as warm as La Rosa’s pulled-from-the-oven pies.
