Don't be fooled by the name or the sun-bleached cakes in the window. La Villita's pastries are decidedly mediocre, while the sandwiches and tacos are among the best deals in Williamsburg. The carne enchilada taco—two corn tortillas wrapped around strips of roasted pork flavored with a surprisingly complex blend of spices, then slathered with a zesty pico de gallo—puts to shame much pricier versions at more traditional restaurants for blocks around. For breakfast, it's hard to beat the egg-and-bacon sandwich, which may be on the salty side but comes with a generous dollop of filling in a torpedo roll. Atmosphere is lacking: Sit-in dining consists of a couple of small, greasy tables shoved against one wall; even the crucifix on the wall is covered with Saran Wrap. For a putative bakery, a surprising number of the pastry shelves are bare. The customers are mostly construction workers or harried young professionals who pop in for a 75-cent Sanka.
Recommended DishesCarne enchilada taco, $2; bacon and egg sandwich, $2.75
