L’acajou could be the bistro-hangout in one of those French gangster films where existentially weary, well-dressed lawbreakers spend more time dining than thugging. Aside from its seasonal menu of elegant and homey bistro classics, little has changed since L'acajou opened in 1985. The floors are red and black zigzag-patterned terrazzo, and French cycling and Loterie Nationale posters line the dining room's ochre walls, softly lit by repro Deco sconces. Track lighting and tribal sculptures and other artwork remind you that the place was decorated in the eighties. Among the mostly over-40 clientele, suit jackets are the sartorial choice, worn in varying degrees of informality. Cloth napkins and bottles from the well-stocked list of primarily Alsatian, Loire Valley, and Burgundian wines often mark tables as "in use" while an entire party adjourns to the sidewalk for a smoke between courses. Meals could easily last hours, beginning with well-prepared standards like duck confit, housemade pâté, or terrine de foie gras; moving on to tiny and tender Moules Marinière, mussels in white wine, or gently stewed escargot with baby shiitakes; and then to such adroit but uncomplicated preparations as batter-coated cod or balsamic-coated duck breast. The tarte tatin and crème brûlée alone are worth putting off the next heist until tomorrow.
