Profile

The best is made of this sliver of a dining room. Lanterns with quirky geometrical patterns hang from the painted tin ceiling, and a wall of exposed brick wears a horizontal stripe of mesh fabric, which mutes the light of the candles behind. Bangkok-born chef and owner David Bank sticks mainly to familiar Thai dishes, and produces pleasing if not authentic renditions. As with most Thai restaurants geared toward American tastes, his dishes tend to the overly sweet. But green papaya salad and pad Thai are closer to savory and the green curry also demonstrates a balance of sweet, spicy, and salty. Aside from noodle dishes, curries, and stir-fries, Bank offers dishes that reflect his time spent as sous chef at Jean Georges’s Mercer Kitchen. Tender meat in grilled beef salad gets the traditional, fiery treatment of dried chilies, fish sauce, and lime juice; peppery watercress and julienne green apple provide welcome novelty. Sure, seared duck breast set above yu choy and roasted slivers of sweet potato, and sauced with a sweet demi glace with a hint of kaffir lime, is hardly Thai. But who cares when it's this good.

On a recent Saturday night, I went to Land UES . I had selected the papaya salad for an app and the drunken noodlesas an entree. I asked our server that the oyster/fish sauce be left out of the preparation. I understand that this may reduce authenticity of the dish; however, I still enjoy the other flavors in the dish. The server kindly informed me that this was not possible because the sauce was "premade". Really? I was shocked that they simply couldn't ask the chef to use some lime, soy, ginger, basil, chili and oil in the preparation. I asked what I could have made on the menu without Oyster/Fish sauce and she said I could have "fried rice." Everything else on the menu included premade sauces according to our waitress. Good to know, that everything is premade and that the chef is unwavering. . Ultimately it left me with a choice of two appetizers, dumplings and spring rolls, which due to the lack of dietary accomodation by the chef, we decided to leave the restaurant. .

Surprisingly Good

The food was absolutely delicious - best Thai restaurant that I've been to. I even detected a slight presence of fish sauce in one of the dishes, which made it quite Vietnamese-tasting. The dessert (warm chocolate cake) was out of this world. The place is very crowded for dinner so expect to wait at least 30-45 minutes. Not great for huge groups but for 2 people (maybe 3-4 even), the food is worth it.
