Profile
It’s still possible to visit this intimate East Village Italian/Mediterranean spot and feel as though you discovered it yourself. Tucked away on a quiet side street, the cozy one room eatery—complete with quaint touches, like candlelight and a tin ceiling—is comfortably romantic. A wood burning oven is responsible for some of the greater successes, like the crisp-crusted pizza margherita and the whole roasted fish served with an enticing grape tomato relish. But be prepared to leave smelling like smoke. — Gabriella Gershenson

We had a pizza as an appetizer to sample the famous wood-fired oven and it was magnificent - although probably better to share between 3 or 4 than two. For mains we had a pasta and the fish special - Cod with baked potatoes and spinach. Both were excellent. The Cod tasted like real, fresh Cod with no apologies - texture in particular was perfect. The pasta - sweet pea ravioli - was home-made and perfectly delicious. The piece de la resistance was the peach pie though. The short pastry was amazing in the wood-fired oven (we imagine). A great neighborhood addition that we'll definitely be back to! Thanks!
I'm appalled at how far Lavagna has fallen. There were roaches (most likely dead, but a few looked semi-alive) in corners of the dining room. I was in shock b/c I used to like this restaurant - the owner/host has always been rude but I withstood it for the food. However, seeing roaches was the last straw - my friend and I had already eaten our entrees by the time we spotted the vermin and felt sick to our stomaches. We immediately paid our bills and left - do NOT eat at Lavagna!!
