The caffeine-charged buzz of fidgeting acolytes makes actually sitting down at most coffee shops a fiesty event. So here's an antidote built on the French creperie format: easy, slow, with a moist, butter-laden atmosphere and croissants close to hand. If it stopped there, Le Gamin's hand-made feel could be judged grand. But while café dishes like mussels and salad Niçoise sound simple enough, they can easily go astray. Dessert crepes are luxurious, eggy, and lush, with oodles of melted Valrhona chocolate, alone or paired with sliced bananas, or with chestnut purée and crème fraiche. Salads and soups are hit and miss, sandwiches can be underheated (the kitchenette that serves the room seems sometimes overtaxed), but those wandering back from the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens or the Brooklyn Museum of Art seem relieved to find a rest stop on this strip of Vanderbilt Ave.
Recommended DishesCrepe complete, $10; crepe chocolat, $6.50, croque monsieur, $9.50
