Located on an inauspicious stretch of East Fifth Street, Le Tableau is one of those blink-and-you’ll-miss-it East Village French brasseries whose business gets sadly bamboozled by area Goliaths, like Casimir and Jules, whose rabid, rowdy patronage devours steak-frites as though it were the only option in ghetto bistroage. Credit Le Tableau for featuring seasonal menus rife with prix-fixe options and a chef’s tasting menu in five courses, with wine pairings, topping off at $68 per person. Main courses range far and wide depending on the season: Recently you could Berkshire Pork Loin and a seven-spices salmon strudel with sweet corn and fava bean ragout for virtually the same price as your average hanger steak covered in lardy frites. Et pourquoi pas?
